Book only what you need before departure
Keep the first night and onward transport easy to retrieve
A confirmed hotel, a passport-name train ticket, or an airport transfer can reduce the number of decisions you need to make immediately after landing.
The useful preparation is the kind that still works when a card needs another verification step, a phone does not support eSIM, or a flight arrives after public transport has stopped. Treat this as a backup checklist rather than a promise that every service will work the same way for every traveler.
Complete the items that apply to your itinerary before departure, and keep a copy of the important details outside the app that created them.

Check your phone and install an eSIM if it fits your plan
Confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. If you buy an eSIM, follow the provider's installation instructions while you still have dependable Wi-Fi, then keep the activation details and support contact offline.

Set up a second payment option
Foreign visitors can link eligible international cards to Alipay or Weixin Pay, but eligibility and merchant acceptance depend on the card issuer, verification, and purchase. Set up both an app and a card-based booking backup before departure.
Step 3
Save essential addresses and bookings offline
Keep your hotel name and address in Chinese, booking references, airport-transfer instructions, and the first train or flight details in a place you can open without a connection.
Step 4
Download offline language and map support
Download any offline language packs and maps you expect to need. Check your chosen map app's coverage for the cities on your itinerary before relying on it after arrival.
Step 5
Decide how you will leave the airport
Choose an official taxi queue, rail connection, hotel pickup, or a pre-booked transfer. Check the arrival time against local transport hours and save the pickup instructions.

If an eSIM is suitable for your device, install it before your flight and read the plan's coverage, activation, and roaming terms. Keep a second option such as airport Wi-Fi or a physical SIM plan in mind in case activation does not go as expected.
