TenPayGo in China: how to pay when the cashier shows a QR code
TenPayGo is Tencent's iPhone app for visitors who want to pay at Weixin Pay merchants in China. Version 1.1.0 now advertises support for e-wallets from multiple countries and regions, so the practical question is no longer only “can I install it?” — it is “which button do I press at the counter?”

Good news — not your only payment plan
China counters often work in two opposite ways. Sometimes the merchant shows a printed Alipay or Weixin Pay QR code and expects you to scan it. Sometimes the merchant has a scanner and expects you to show your payment code. TenPayGo can be useful in both moments, but only if you know where scan-to-pay and show-code-to-pay are before there is a queue behind you. Keep Alipay, WeChat Pay, or cash as an independent backup.

Tencent's App Store release notes for TenPayGo 1.1.0 say the app added support for e-wallets from multiple countries and regions for payments in China, refreshed the interface, and added more travel services. TenPay Global also describes two visitor routes: international cards and international e-wallets that can be used at Weixin Pay merchants in mainland China.

TenPay Global states that international visitors can link eligible international credit or debit cards to Weixin Pay before or after arrival in mainland China, and that participating international e-wallets can also work at Weixin Pay merchants. Card, wallet, country, and verification support can change, so use the official current instructions for your setup.

Merchant shows a QR code
Open TenPayGo, choose scan-to-pay, and scan the Alipay or Weixin Pay QR stand the cashier points to. This is the common counter, taxi, stall, and restaurant flow.

Merchant scans your payment code
Open TenPayGo's show-code-to-pay screen when the cashier has a scanner. Hold the screen steady until the register confirms payment.

Pay in a merchant app
Choose Weixin Pay within a participating merchant app when it is presented as a checkout option, then confirm inside TenPayGo.
Watch once before you land
A short video is useful because TenPayGo is about muscle memory: open the right screen, scan the merchant QR, or show your payment code. Use the official App Store screenshots for the current app interface, then watch the Interface News video for a quick media overview of why Tencent built the app for inbound visitors.
Set up before travel
- Install TenPayGo from the official App Store listing and check whether your country, card, Apple Pay setup, or home e-wallet is supported.
- Find the scan-to-pay and show-code-to-pay screens before you need them. Take screenshots of the steps if you are nervous.
- Make one small test purchase after arrival. A convenience store or coffee counter is better than your first taxi or hotel checkout.
- Keep a second, independent payment method available. Do not assume every card, wallet, or merchant QR path will behave the same way.
- Arrange mobile data before departure so payment setup and support do not depend on airport Wi-Fi.

Keep essentials offline. Save your hotel address and arrival plan as screenshots, so a setup delay does not disrupt the trip.
